Tijuana 2-1 San Luis in Liga MX 2023:
Tijuana Earns Critical 2-1 Victory Over San Luis in Week 7 of Liga MX
Club Tijuana secured a pivotal 2-1 win over Atletico San Luis on Saturday night during the 7th week of action in Liga MX’s Clausura 2023 tournament. The victory snaps Tijuana’s two-game losing skid and moves them up to 9th place in the league table.
Tijuana controlled possession early on but it was San Luis who struck first in the match. Argentine forward German Berterame cut through the Tijuana defense in the 37th minute and slid a neat pass to striker Jhon Duque who slotted it home to put San Luis up 1-0.
The home crowd at Estadio Caliente thought Tijuana had equalized right before halftime when Lucas Rodríguez put the ball in the back of the net. But the goal was disallowed by VAR review due to a controversial offside call.
Tijuana Deservedly Equalizes
Tijuana continued their momentum into the second half and finally found an equalizer in the 54th minute through midfielder Victor Guzman. He got on the end of a pinpoint long pass from Fernando Beltran and fired a low shot beyond the San Luis keeper to make it 1-1.
Just two minutes later, Tijuana nearly took the lead when veteran striker Daniel Lopez’s shot rattled the crossbar. But the home side’s pressure finally resulted in a go-ahead goal in the 64th minute courtesy of Facundo Ferreyra.
The Argentine striker rose highest to head in a looping cross from fullback Vladimir Loroña to complete Tijuana’s comeback. San Luis tried to find another equalizer but the Tijuana defense held firm this time around.
Key Results for Struggling Sides
The victory snaps a worrying two-game losing streak for Tijuana who lost 4 out of their last 5 matches coming into Week 7. The three points are massive for manager David Patiño as his side tries to regroup and work their way up the standings.
For San Luis, the loss is a setback after an encouraging start under new manager Andre Jardine. They drop down to 14th place with two wins, two draws and three losses so far. Both clubs are hoping to avoid another relegation battle and stay in the top division.
Looking Ahead
Tijuana will look to build on this performance when they visit Toluca next Saturday. San Luis returns home to face Pachuca who currently sit 2nd in the league table. The season is still young but gaining momentum now is crucial with the condensed schedule.
The match highlighted Tijuana’s fighting spirit as they twice came from behind to earn a deserved victory. San Luis will need to shore up their defense and midfield to get their campaign back on track after this missed opportunity.
